Study together and continue privately

Join a shared study room, understand teacher oversight, and take a chosen passage into your own Chat.

Join or create a room

Open Rooms in the web app, or follow an invitation link from the organiser. Before joining, read who can see the transcript, which teachers oversee the room, and whose AI provider processes messages. Choose a display name and confirm the role shown on the join screen.

To start a standalone group, choose New room and set its title, topic, and goal. The Invite panel creates links and QR codes with a role, expiry, and use limit. A course owner or teacher can also open a room from a lesson's Study rooms section. Course members can join through that section after reviewing the disclosure.

Understand what the room shares

The room has one shared transcript, including earlier messages and replies from Keating. Members can export what they can see. Hosts and teachers can moderate the room, mute or remove members, pause Keating, and review held replies. Observers can read but cannot post or run Keating.

Private teacher guidance and held replies are visible only to hosts and teachers. Joining a room does not give them access to your personal Chat history or course progress. Participation counts describe contributions in the loaded transcript; they do not measure your understanding.

Run Keating from one browser

A permitted member chooses Run Keating from this tab, reads the disclosure naming their configured Chat model, then confirms Use my model access. That browser sends the room context to its chosen model provider and uses its own provider access or credits. Keep the tab open while facilitating.

Teachers' facilitating browsers also send private teacher guidance. Learners' facilitating browsers receive only shared context. The room settings decide who may facilitate; teacher review restricts facilitation to teachers. Members can keep talking while Keating is off.

Take a chosen passage into private Chat

  • As a room learner, choose Continue privately on a visible public message from a person or Keating. In a course, choose Continue privately below the lesson reading.
  • Review the source. Expand Choose a passage to select text in the original-source field; the excerpt above it shows exactly what will be used. Select a nonempty passage of up to 8,000 characters. Use whole source restores the full message or reading when it fits; longer readings require an excerpt.
  • Optionally enter Your question, then choose Open private Chat. The source stays in the room or lesson. Room context ends at your chosen message and excludes later messages, hidden content, private guidance, and held replies.
  • Chat opens with the imported context and your question prepared in the composer. Nothing is sent and no model runs merely by opening it. Press Send message when you are ready; the conversation uses your own chosen Chat model.

Accept or dismiss an offer from Keating

Keating may offer you a private continuation from an existing public message. Only you receive it under Your private study offers. Choose Review private offer to inspect its source, or Dismiss offer. Opening it remains your choice.

When teacher review is enabled, a teacher first uses Approve private-study offer or Reject offer. Pausing Keating during a turn can also hold its offer for review. The teacher reviews an invitation to continue privately; they do not edit a private message body or gain access to your subsequent Chat.

Opened offers show Reopen private Chat, which checks your room membership and source access before returning to the same saved continuation without replacing its history. Dismissed offers disappear. An existing saved continuation remains available through normal Chat history even when the room offer cannot reopen it.

Keep the source and privacy boundaries clear

Imported room context and Imported lesson context identify copied source material separately from your own answers. Expand View full imported context to inspect the saved quotation and attribution. Those imported quotations are excluded from learner-evidence extraction; your later answers follow your normal learning settings.

The continuation is saved in normal Chat history with the usual storage, sync, export, and explicit-sharing controls. Room teachers and classmates cannot read it through the room. A shared browser profile can still contain the same local history, and sharing or exporting the private chat may include the copied source. Opening it never completes a lesson or sends a course submission.

Return to the source or recover an error

Return to source room or Return to source lesson opens a new tab at the exact message or lesson reading. For older room messages, use Load earlier source messages until the requested message is loaded. A lesson's current reading may have changed since your private copy was saved.

If the source changed, was hidden, or is no longer available to you, return to the source and choose it again. Keating does not substitute a nearby passage. Your saved private copy remains in Chat history. If no model is configured or your selected model is unavailable, choose or connect one in Chat settings, then retry Open private Chat.
